Optimizing carbon capture simulation through advanced modelling tools
Background
The goal of the project is to develop accurate, robust software tools to be used in and with process
simulators for a variety of standard, novel and innovative carbon capture processes. These tools will
include accurate thermodynamic models for describing the relevant thermodynamic, phase equilibrium
and energetic properties essential to describing capture processes, as well as models for relevant process
equipment such as absorbers and desorbers.
These tools will include accurate thermodynamic models for describing the relevant thermodynamic,
phase equilibrium and energetic properties essential to describing capture processes, as well as models
for relevant process equipment. Accurate design is essential for capture processes – increasingly so as
plants get bigger and more integrated.
An understanding of the propagation of errors is essential in optimizing the design and operations of the
facilities in the CCUS network.
Accurate design is essential to design of complete capture processes – increasingly so as plants get bigger
and more integrated, since value from efficiency increases at scale.
The project consists of the overarching WP4 for overall integration and management, and three others
on technical topics: WP1: Algorithms & thermodynamic models; WP2: Process uncertainties and
optimization; WP3: SSA – whole system analysis
We will further develop and leverage our expertise in algorithms and models and implement them in
simulators and other third‐party software tools.
